Letter from the Chairman - May 2024

Chairman John Wood writes:

The Collingbourne Ducis 80th D Day celebration will take place on Sunday 30 June 2024 from 12:00 to 17:00 on the Recreation Ground.  There will be live music, competitions, fancy dress, and food and drink.  Please come join the celebration and picnic on the Rec, more information to follow.

As many of you will be aware there was a recent incident involving a motor bike being rammed into the doors of the village hall.  Vandalism is an increasing issue within the village and becoming a significant financial burden for parishioners and the Parish Council.  Repairing damaged property, such as broken windows, graffiti removal, and replacing public infrastructure, all incurs direct costs. Left unchecked, areas with high rates of vandalism often see decline in value, putting off potential buyers and investors, which are deterred by the perceived decline in neighbourhood safety and aesthetics.  The broken windows theory suggests that visible signs of disorder and neglect, such as vandalism, can lead to more serious crimes.  Engaging with the community about the impact of vandalism can help prevent it and foster a sense of pride and ownership of their surroundings.  Increasing lighting in public areas, together with the wider use of surveillance cameras can act as a deterrent and assist in identifying perpetrators. Increased police presence and more visible community policing can also help deter the vandals.   Whilst the perpetrators remain unchecked and are free to re-offend, we will continue to invest in repairing the damage and enhancing security and surveillance.  Please report any incidents of vandalism either to the Police or the Parish Council.

Finally, a call to arms, please come and join our Village Speed Watch Team.  The Speed Watch Team are looking for willing volunteers who are concerned for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians, and fellow drivers.  Speeding continues to be one of the biggest concerns in our village and with your help we can make a difference.  As a volunteer you will be trained to operate speed detection equipment, record vehicles speeds, and assist in raising awareness of speed limits.  The commitment is a few hours every two weeks, training will be provided and there is no prior experience necessary.  If you are interested in joining the Village Speed Watch Programme please contact the Parish Clerk at the email address below.  Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone in our village and make a real difference.

Our next Parish Meeting is scheduled for Thursday 04 July 2024 at 7.00 pm at Collingbourne Village Hall. Parish Council Meetings are open events, which members of the public are more than welcome to attend. If any parishioners wish to get involved in any of the activities, including Speed Watch or just want to contact with the Parish Council, do feel free to email the Parish Clerk, Mr Phil Gill, parishclerk@collingbourne-ducis.com.
