#NoMowMay

Exciting news!

Collingbourne Ducis Parish Council is joining with Plantlife for their No Mow May campaign.

No Mow May is Plantlife’s annual campaign calling all garden owners and green space managers not to mow during May – liberating your lawns and providing a space for nature.

This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of wildflowers and the wildlife that depends on them. Mowing is one of the primary reasons for the decline in wildflowers. By reducing or stopping mowing in May, we can create habitats for wildflowers, providing food sources for pollinators and other wildlife.

No Mow May in Collingbourne Ducis

Throughout May, the Parish Council will stop mowing several local sites, allowing them to grow naturally, including:

  • Collingbourne Ducis Recreation Ground (excluding the cricket playing field)

  • The Great Mere and its amenity area

  • small village greens adjacent to the A338/A346 roundabout

  • the war memorial green

  • the Parish Council burial grounds

We’ve marked these areas around the village with signs made from recycled materials.

Collingbourne Ducis Parish Council's participation in No Mow May is a significant step towards supporting local biodiversity. By allowing these areas to grow naturally, we’re creating havens for wildlife and prioritising our promise to create beautiful and peaceful environments for residents to enjoy.

Introducing rewilding areas

In addition to partaking in No Mow May, we’re pleased to share that we will also be introducing two “rewilding areas” in the village. Rewilding areas work to reconnect and reset, to reverse species extinction and to help nature flourish.

The two areas for rewilding are:

  • the immediate vicinity around the Memorial Orchard at the Recreation Ground

  • The Great Mere

These rewilding areas will still be mown twice per year - once at the beginning of the season and once at the end. This is a necessary measure to remove invasive species and give local plant life the opportunity to thrive.

Get involved

We encourage everyone to get involved in No Mow May! Visit the Plantlife website for more information about caring for your lawn and supporting natural local plantlife.

By taking small steps, such as reducing mowing along with proper plantlife management, we can create a more sustainable and biodiverse future for ourselves and future generations.
